Different but One: How Can We Overcome Religious and Cultural Differences and Live Together in a Multicultural Australia? How can we overcome religious and cultural differences and build a society where people of different faiths and backgrounds can live together with mutual respect and understanding? How can religious beliefs promote the values of respect, tolerance, inclusion and peaceful coexistence? Does religion divide us, or can it bring us together? In this episode, I explore the challenges of living in a diverse, multicultural society like Australia, including misunderstanding, stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination and the difficulties that can arise when different religious and cultural traditions meet. We also look at how dialogue, education, personal connections and mutual understanding can help bridge these differences and strengthen social cohesion. I speak with Christian, Muslim and Jewish religious leaders, as well as Australian women from different faiths and cultural backgrounds, about their experiences, perspectives and hopes for a more inclusive and harmonious community. My guests include Sheikh Dr Salim Alwan Al-Husseini, Secretary-General of Darulfatwa Australia and the Australian Islamic High Council; His Grace Bishop Basilios Kodsieh, Bishop of the Antiochian Orthodox Church in Australia; and Rabbi Ralph Genende. Together, we explore whether our differences have to separate us, or whether they can become a source of understanding, friendship and strength — and whether, despite our different beliefs and traditions, we can truly be different but one.
