Nicki reflects on her recent working retreat at Taraloka Women’s Retreat Centre in the Welsh borders, with lots of friends from our Centre

Taraloka holds a special place in my heart. It’s where I first encountered Triratna, where I connected with the Manchester Sangha, overcame resistance to devotional practice, and realised I wanted to reorient my life around Going for Refuge to the Three Jewels. So when the chance came to join a working retreat – giving back to Taraloka with Dharma sisters from Manchester – I jumped at it.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from a week in semi-retreat conditions, doing team-based right livelihood. Given my work-related habits – perfectionism, fear of failure – the lead-up felt challenging, but my desire to connect and contribute was stronger.

What struck me was how different the approach was: stopping when the bell rang, honouring tea and meditation breaks, being encouraged to check in with how we were feeling, and to rest or switch tasks if needed. It was about undoing the usual drive to push through, and instead listening to what felt right in body and heart.

Though I hadn’t expected it, I experienced moments of deep insight. I found myself connecting more fully – with nature, the land, the community, and my sangha. I watched old habits arise, like the urge to speed up before a break, and learned to meet them with awareness. In one meditation, Avalokiteshvara offered me love when I felt empty – and with it came the clarity to know when to pause, when to reach out, and when to simply be.

It was a beautiful and unexpected experience and one I’d recommend to anyone – whatever your ability. I’d love to do it again.
