If an agency or an attorney asked for your I-9s and your exempt classifications tomorrow, how confident would you feel handing them over?

Has your company crossed a headcount threshold in the last three years? If so, what changed when it did, and did anyone stop to ask?

Where does compliance knowledge live in your company right now? If you left tomorrow, would the next person be able to find it?

Nothing has gone wrong yet.

That's what I hear most often when I ask an HR generalist about compliance. Not "we're buttoned up." Not "we audit this every year." Just: "Nothing's gone wrong yet."

And I get it. I really do. When you're the only HR person in a company of eighty or a hundred and fifty people, compliance isn't the fire you're putting out today. Today it's the manager who won't document anything, the hiring push, the benefits question, the employee who's upset about their schedule. Compliance sits in the background. It's the binder on the shelf. The poster in the break room. The handbook somebody updated a while ago.

And because nothing has gone wrong, it feels like it's working.

But here's the thing about compliance in a small company. It rarely breaks all at once. It drifts. A law changes and the handbook doesn't. The company crosses a headcount threshold and nobody notices. The person who knew how the I-9 process worked leaves, and the new person does it a little differently. None of those things feel like a crisis. And then one day, an employee files a complaint, or an agency sends a letter, or an attorney asks for records, and all of that quiet drift shows up at once.

That's what winging it costs. Not today. Eventually.

So in this episode, we're going to talk about why compliance drifts in growing companies, the five areas most likely to be quietly out of date in your organization right now, and how to build a simple annual compliance calendar so you're not relying on memory and luck.

If you've ever looked at your compliance setup and thought, "I really should get to that," this episode is your nudge.
