When eleven-year-old Jesse befriends a strange new transfer student named Stan, his mother initially assumes it’s nothing more than another awkward childhood friendship. But within days, Jesse begins acting increasingly disturbed—speaking in hushed tones about “The Church of Stan,” waking up screaming in the middle of the night, and becoming terrified of a mysterious game he refuses to explain. As paranoia and exhaustion consume both mother and son, unsettling rules begin to emerge involving mirrors, darkness, and things that move closer when the lights go out. Then Stan finally appears at their front door alongside his pale, silent sister, and what begins as childish make-believe spirals into something far more sinister. Trapped inside a game with rules they barely understand and consequences too horrifying to ignore, Jesse’s mother realizes far too late that some stories are dangerous simply because you’ve heard them.
