"Dong Fu, the Dragon Keeper" (董父养龙, dǒng fù yǎng lóng) comes from Zuo Zhuan, a Chinese book from about 2,400 years ago. The old book says that in the days of Emperor Shun, a man named Dong Fu loved dragons. He found out what each dragon liked to eat and drink, so dragons came to live with him, and Shun gave him the family name Dong. What dragons eat is not in the book. In our telling, dragons love to eat mist on rainy days — an idea we added, since old Chinese stories always put dragons together with clouds and rain. We also say at the end that dragons are imaginary.

Long ago, on rainy days, a long head with horns would rise out of the river. Everyone ran home and shut the door — except Dong Fu. He sat by the river all day, wondering: what does a dragon eat? He threw in a big fish. The dragon ignored it. He put out a piece of meat. The dragon turned away. Then, in a big rain, he saw the dragon lift its head and breathe in the white mist... That's it! But how do you feed a dragon mist? Dong Fu lit a fire. The smoke drifted over, the dragon took one sniff — "Ah-CHOO!" What do you think Dong Fu tries next?
