Natalie Harp has told the country for seven years that she would be dead
if Trump hadn't signed the Right to Try Act on May 30, 2018, and the
Washington Post found her tweeting about the treatment she was already
taking that March. That is the tidiest problem in a very deep pile. Her
origin story has appeared in at least three incompatible versions that
were live at the same time and never corrected, the hospital error that
supposedly started all of it has left no paperwork anywhere in almost
eleven years, no complaint and no lawsuit and no fundraiser, and in
seven years of telling it she has never named the hospital, the
oncologist, the drug, or a single one of the trials she says turned her
down. Snopes tried to fact-check this in August and had to give up,
landing on neither true nor false because there is almost nothing on the
record to rate it against. The story is the entire reason she holds one
of the closest jobs to the president in the country, a role with no
confirmation hearing and no vetting beyond his personal preference, and
she has been promoted twice since.
