Fiona Ford was four years into a professional triathlon career, racing Ironman distance for the GB long course team, when out of nowhere, a car pulled out of a junction on a training ride through the Surrey Hills and hit her. She was descending at 25mph. She sustained a shattered pelvis, sacrum, clavicle and vertebrae, and a doctor couldn't tell her if she'd ever walk again. Followed by months on opioid painkillers that changed who she was before she'd even begun the road to recovery.

In this episode, Fiona talks about relearning to stand, the flashbacks that came with weaning off Tramadol, and a recovery that took years before she returned to racing and eventually standing on the podium again at the Ironman World Championships in Kona.

She talks about the business that nearly collapsed while she lay in hospital, the athletes who fired her by email, and what she now believes about leadership after having to lead herself back from the hardest place she's ever been.

She also talks about her current work as a triathlon coach, a football club nutritionist, and a PhD researcher asking why so much of sports science still isn't built for women's bodies.

Not a comeback story. A story about what it takes to lead yourself back from the brink and come back winning.
