We tried to extract the dead. Then the Striders threaded their struts through the corpses to build a bigger body. | Military Sci-Fi Infantry Story for Sleep
On the Salvation, a decommissioned agricultural orbital station with failing spin gravity, a failed quarantine has allowed an alien organism to digest the station’s metal infrastructure. A squad of human infantry enters the collapsing agricultural ring to extract a trapped science team from a flooded gravity-transition shaft, while the alien Striders consume structural metal and human tissue to physically assemble into larger, directionless organisms.
Navigating dead biomass columns, the combat engineer leads the squad single-file across liquefying deck plating, using tactile feedback to bypass sections where the metal has lost its structural integrity. The mission shifts when they find the scientists, discovering that the Striders colonize human corpses, threading iridescent struts through bone and eye sockets to use the dead as a growth medium.
Coriolis forces in the shaft break their tactical formation just as the Strider fragments disarticulate and use the shifting gravity gradients to attack from impossible angles. With the extraction route gone and the deck actively failing under their boots, the narrator’s wrist is permanently scarred by progressive, irreversible Strider enzyme corrosion as the squad is forced deeper into the unstable shaft.
This is "The Salvation" by Sascha Schmidt.
Military Sci-Fi Story for Sleep is an anthology of immersive military science fiction told from the infantry perspective. Each standalone sleep story blends grounded sci-fi military operations, hostile alien encounters, survival horror, and impossible missions in deep space with calm, steady narration created for sleep.
