Generating music with AI is a legitimate creative tool, and nobody owes an apology for using it. Mastering is the one step Josh won't hand to a machine. This episode explains why, through two stories from this week's blog.

In the first, a comedy song series had a singer who sang straight through every punchline pause. With no stems, the fix had to be cut into the finished stereo master: full stops around three punchlines, each timed differently so the jokes build to the last one, plus five timed pauses in another song. No algorithm knows where the joke is.

In the second, one track in a set was clipping in eighteen places. Streaming normalization only adjusts playback level, and it doesn't repair anything, so all eighteen clips survive the trip to Spotify.

A shortcut sounds like a shortcut.
