South African Airways Flight 295, a Boeing 747 Combi known as the Helderberg, disappeared over the Indian Ocean in 1987 after a devastating fire broke out in its cargo area. As thick, toxic smoke began filling the aircraft, the crew made desperate attempts to clear the fumes and save those on board, but the fire eventually overwhelmed the aircraft.Investigators faced enormous challenges in recovering the wreckage, which lay roughly 4,400 meters beneath the ocean.
