In ninth-century Constantinople, a brilliant young woman named Kassia answers an emperor's riddle so sharply that he turns away from her forever, choosing another bride instead. Rather than fade into bitterness, Kassia founds her own convent, defies imperial persecution to defend the veneration of icons, and becomes the only woman whose music survives in the Byzantine liturgy. Decades later, the same emperor who once rejected her reads an unfinished hymn she left on her table, adds a single line to it without ever speaking to her, and leaves. Harmonia traces how two people who never truly spoke to each other still finished something whole together, and asks what it means to add your own unfinished line to a truth still unfolding.
