Harmonia steps off the subway in Beijing and into the Yonghe Temple, the Palace of Harmony and Peace, where crowds of tourists flow past a towering statue of Je Tsongkhapa and a single question will not let her go: if a prayer is offered in a hall full of tourists and no one stops to listen, is it still a prayer? From a nomad childhood in Tibet's Onion Valley to a breakthrough in a mountain retreat in 1397, she follows the fourteenth-century monk who studied with rival schools, refused to stop thinking, and refused to call the world an illusion. Through a falling tree, a rope mistaken for a snake, and the clapping debates of monks that still echo today, Harmonia explores Tsongkhapa's insight that nothing stands alone and nothing is fixed, and why the way we see is the root of everything we build.
