Matty Beniers is stepping into a new leadership role as an alternate captain for the Kraken, joining veterans Brandon Montour and Vince Dunn — a promotion that reflects his steady growth since being drafted second overall in 2021. After a rocky sophomore season, Beniers has matured both on and off the ice, embracing his commitment to Seattle with fiery conviction: “If you don’t want to be here, we don’t want you.” The team’s young core is being guided by seasoned voices, with Beniers standing out as the youngest leader — a path different from captains like Jordan Eberle or Dunn, who earned their roles through years of experience. With new offensive firepower like Bobby McMann and healthy Jared McCann, Beniers is focused on consistency and team chemistry, aided by new assistant coach Pascal Vincent. Dunn, reflecting on his own journey, sees Beniers’ evolution from college kid to passionate competitor as inspiring — and he’s eager to mentor the next generation. Behind the scenes, Beniers is also working with a sports psychologist to balance the mental demands of the NHL with the joy of playing in Seattle.
