Anthropic is adding a rule against sustained, needless abuse or cruelty toward Claude. The policy takes effect on November 12, 2026, and Anthropic says it targets rare, extreme cases. Ordinary frustration, pushback, creative work and model testing are excluded.
I read the policy, look at Anthropic's earlier research on letting Claude end conversations, and ask what the word cruelty does to the relationship between a customer and an AI assistant. People already get attached to these systems. Giving an assistant the language of suffering changes how people think about the software they use.
There is also a practical question: what happens when you're frustrated because Claude has broken your code or wasted hours of your time? I want a useful assistant I can correct and work with. Anthropic's exemption for normal frustration needs to work during a normal working day.
