When choosing a relationship is not the same as choosing an enduring shared life
Choosing each other matters.
But choosing an Exclusive Relationship is not the same as choosing an enduring shared life.
In this episode of Love By Design, I explore what happens after two people decide to be together, when the relationship itself begins revealing information that dating could not.
I share a personal story from one of the kindest relationships of my life. The love was real. The relationship was good. But over time, I had to face the possibility that the fully integrated shared life I wanted might not actually be available.
This episode explores the difference between choosing a relationship and choosing a life together, without making either person wrong.
We talk about:
- What an Exclusive Relationship actually asks of two people
- Why commitment does not end discernment
- How ordinary life reveals what dating cannot
- The difference between a difficult moment and a meaningful pattern
- Why good and aligned are not always the same thing
- How to tell when you may be compromising versus slowly negotiating yourself out of your own requirements
- Why one person can practice Relationship Intelligence alone, but mutuality requires two people
- How repeated participation matters more than beautiful intentions
A relationship is not only built from what two people say they want.
It is built from how they participate.
Think about one repeated pattern in your relationship.
Ask yourself:
- What has actually happened more than once?
- What meaning have I given it?
- What else could reasonably be true?
- What conversation or action does the present information support?
The goal is not to put the relationship on trial.
The goal is to understand the relationship you are actually building.
And eventually, to ask:
Is this the shared life we both want to keep building?
How clearly do you observe, interpret, discern and decide when your feelings are involved?
