"The Toy Farm" is a short story about the five MacMulligan children — Joseph, Cassie, twins Patsy and Timmy, and little four-year-old Annie — who pool their efforts to buy a fifty-cent toy farm for their mother's Christmas present. Starting with only a quarter, each child finds a creative way to earn their share: chasing a lost cat through alleys, returning a dropped bundle to a stranger in a busy crowd, and learning a Christmas verse by heart. With just days to spare and the fear that the farm may already be sold, the stakes feel very real.
