Uncle Wiggily and the Little Birds is a short story about a brave old rabbit gentleman who takes to the sky in his homemade airship — a clothes basket lifted by toy balloons — just as a mother bird is coaxing her frightened chicks to take their first flight. When the little birds refuse to jump from the branch, Uncle Wiggily floats his airship beneath them, promising to catch anyone who falls. His cheerful daring gives the timid chicks exactly the courage they need to leap into the air for the very first time.
