When Devotion Becomes Spontaneous — Nectar of Devotion, Chapter 15

Dela

In this episode of Bhakti Bites, we explore Chapter 15 of the Nectar of Devotion — a turning point in the text where the discussion shifts from regulated devotion to spontaneous devotion, the natural outpouring of love that arises when the heart is fully captured by God.

Up to this point, the Nectar of Devotion has primarily discussed vaidhi-bhakti — devotion performed according to rules and regulations. This chapter introduces raganuga-bhakti — devotion that follows in the footsteps of those who love God spontaneously, without any need for external motivation.

The difference is like the difference between watering a plant because you know it needs water, and watering it because you can't bear to see it wilt. Both actions look the same from outside, but the inner experience is worlds apart. Regulated devotion is driven by scripture and duty; spontaneous devotion is driven by irresistible attraction.

The chapter describes how spontaneous devotion manifests in the eternal residents of Vrindavan — the cowherd boys, the gopis, Krishna's parents, and others. Their love for Krishna is not prompted by knowledge of His supreme position but by pure, unconditional, personal affection. They don't serve God because He is God — they love Krishna because He is Krishna.

For practitioners still at the regulated stage, the path to spontaneous devotion lies in hearing about these eternal relationships and developing a natural longing to participate in them. This is not about imitating the external behavior of the residents of Vrindavan but about cultivating their inner mood of selfless, all-consuming love.

An episode about the moment when spiritual practice stops being something you do and becomes something you can't stop doing.
