In this episode of Bhakti Bites, we explore Chapter 19 of the Nectar of Devotion — which describes prema, pure love of God, the ultimate destination of all spiritual practice and the highest achievement possible for any living being.
Prema is distinguished from bhava (ecstatic love) by its intensity and permanence. While bhava is like the first rays of the rising sun, prema is the full blazing sun itself — a state of love so concentrated and overwhelming that it completely transforms the devotee's entire existence.
The chapter describes the characteristics of prema: it makes the devotee feel that every moment without Krishna is an eternity of suffering, it causes the devotee to see Krishna's hand in everything, and it produces an intensity of emotional experience that makes even the greatest material pleasures seem utterly insignificant.
A key teaching is that prema cannot be attained through any amount of personal effort — it is always a gift of grace. No technique, no austerity, no accumulation of knowledge can produce it. It descends from the spiritual world into the heart of a devotee who has become a fit recipient through sincere practice and genuine humility.
The chapter concludes the second division of the Nectar of Devotion, completing the progression from the basics of practice through regulated devotion, spontaneous devotion, ecstatic love, and finally pure love. What follows in the remaining chapters will be the detailed analysis of the specific flavors of divine relationship.
An episode about the summit of spiritual aspiration — the love that is both the journey's end and its eternal beginning.
