The Awakening of Ecstatic Love — Nectar of Devotion, Chapter 17

Dela

In this episode of Bhakti Bites, we explore Chapter 17 of the Nectar of Devotion — which begins the second major division of the book, entering the territory of bhava, the first awakening of ecstatic love for God.

This chapter marks a significant transition. The first part of the Nectar of Devotion covered the general principles of devotional practice. Now the text enters the realm of rasa — the science of spiritual emotions and divine relationships. Bhava is the stage just before prema (pure love) and represents a genuine spiritual experience beyond anything the material mind can manufacture.

The chapter describes the characteristics of a person who has attained bhava: they become indifferent to material attractions, they never waste a moment without thinking of God, they remain humble despite their exalted position, they have firm confidence that Krishna will be merciful, they are always eager for devotional service, and they find great relish in chanting the holy names.

A crucial distinction is made between genuine bhava and emotional imitation. Real bhava arises spontaneously from within the heart through the causeless mercy of God or His devotee — it cannot be produced by physical exercises, psychedelic experiences, or emotional manipulation. The symptoms of bhava are natural and unforced, like the reddening of the eastern sky before sunrise.

The chapter also explains that bhava manifests differently according to the devotee's particular relationship with God — some experience it as a deep sense of servitude, others as friendship, others as parental affection, and still others as conjugal love.

An episode about the dawn of divine love — the most precious and sought-after experience in all of spiritual life.
