Many golfers believe an out-to-in swing causes a slice and an in-to-out swing creates a draw. Modern biomechanics shows this is only part of the story. Club path alone does not determine ball curvature. The decisive factor is the relationship between the clubface and the club path at impact.
Club Path describes the direction the clubhead is moving relative to the target.
Clubface Angle describes where the clubface is pointing relative to the target.
Neither value alone explains why the ball curves.
The critical formula is:
Face-to-Path = Clubface Angle − Club Path
Example:
- Clubface: –6°
- Club Path: –2°
- Face-to-Path = –4°
Although the club moves left, the face is even farther left, making it closed relative to the path. This tilts the spin axis left and produces a draw or hook. An out-to-in swing can therefore create a draw if the face is sufficiently closed.
These are two different ball-flight laws:
- Clubface Angle determines approximately 75–85% of the ball's starting direction.
- Face-to-Path determines the spin-axis tilt and therefore the amount and direction of curvature.
Most recreational golfers deliver an out-to-in path with a face that is open relative to the path, creating rightward spin-axis tilt.
However, an in-to-out swing can still produce a push-slice if the face is even more open than the path.
The club path describes direction. The difference between face and path creates curvature.
On drivers, strike location can significantly influence ball flight.
For accurate analysis, coaches should evaluate:
Clubface Angle
Club Path
Face-to-Path
Strike Location
Clubhead Speed
Ball Speed
Spin Loft
Spin Axis
Launch Direction
Observe starting direction.
Observe curvature.
Measure clubface.
Measure club path.
Calculate Face-to-Path.
Check strike location.
Decide whether the face or path needs to change.
Never change club path without understanding the Face-to-Path relationship. Otherwise, swing changes often make ball flight worse instead of better.
Club Path describes movement relative to the target.
Clubface largely controls starting direction.
Face-to-Path is the primary cause of ball curvature.
Gear Effect can modify or override Face-to-Path.
Understanding the relationship between face and path removes guesswork and leads to faster, more effective coaching.
