In January 1996, residents of Varginha, Brazil reported a series of strange events that would become known as "Brazil's Roswell." The most famous account came from three young women who claimed they encountered a small humanoid creature with dark skin, large red eyes, and an oversized head crouching near a vacant lot.
Following the sighting, numerous witnesses reported unusual military activity throughout the city, including soldiers, emergency personnel, and military vehicles searching various locations. Rumors quickly spread that one or more creatures had been captured and removed by authorities.
The case gained further attention after reports that military policeman Marco Eli Chereze, allegedly involved in handling one of the creatures, later died from a severe infection. While officials attributed his death to natural medical causes, some researchers speculated about a connection to the incident.
Brazilian authorities denied all claims of extraterrestrial beings and suggested more conventional explanations, including mistaken identity and the influence of rumors. However, the large number of witnesses and persistent military-recovery stories kept the mystery alive.
The Varginha Incident remains one of the most famous UFO cases in South America, combining alleged alien beings, military involvement, and claims of government secrecy into a mystery that continues to be debated decades later.
