Season 2. Episode 11!
Excited today to have on a brand new guest Jeremy Hudson. Jeremy is the founder of the Hudson Institute of Performance Enhancement (HERE) and a strength and conditioning coach in Canada. Jeremy and I connected recently on LinkedIn over a post I had made questioning the long standing paradigm of the strength endurance continuum. Prompted by a study from Brad Schoenfeld's lab out of Lehman College in New York (HERE).
The long standing belief has been that strength, hypertrophy and muscular endurance exist on a spectrum of training. This desired outcome is mitigated based on things like the relative weight and reps performed for specific exercises and which type of outcome they would impact. More specifically if you're training for "strength" you should work in the 1-5 rep range with a relatively high percentage of your 1-RM. If for instance you wanted to target an muscular "endurance" outcome, you would use a lighter relative load and train with a higher rep volume (20+ reps).
This is what I was taught in school and is still widely taught today. However, recent research (like the paper from Schoenfeld) has shown that this continuum is not as cut and dry as we once thought. Specifically with hypertrophy (muscle growth), there exists a wide range of reps and weights that create a desirable response.
Jeremy and I discuss in detail what this means, not just for athletes, but also casual lifting enthusiasts and how to apply this new understanding to get the most out of your resistance training workouts. I think you'll really enjoy this in depth discussion into a nuanced topic, with a real expert practitioner. Please make sure to like and subscribe for more!
I'm hoping to finish my new book in the next few months, with the same title as this podcast. In the interim if you love the show and want to support, I'd appreciate you picking up a copy of my first book "How 2 Look Good Naked".

If you've ever thought about adding to your own home gym, there's a brand I'm a huge fan of that I couldn't recommend more highly. Temple of Gainz is a California based company that's making waves in the home gym space with some of the best products on the market.
Their thoughtful designs inspired by great machines of the past are constantly being innovated and improved. Their customer service is top notch and they have some of the most competitive prices in the space with their direct to consumer shipping (which is free if you spend more than $1500).
