Don't quote me on that

We use this when we say something we think is true, but we’re not confident enough for someone else to repeat it as a confirmed fact.

In other words:

“I think this is right… but I might be wrong.”

Example:

Imagine you’re eating dumplings with a friend, and they ask:

“Do you know where this style of dumpling originally comes from?”

You say:

“I think it originated in northern China, but don’t quote me on that.”

You remember hearing that somewhere, but you’re not completely sure.

So you share what you remember while making it clear that you haven’t checked the fact yourself.
