It's the thought that counts 

The intention behind a kind gesture is more important than the gesture itself.

We often use it when someone has tried to do something thoughtful, even if the result is not perfect.

Example:

Imagine your friend gives you a birthday present.

You open it and realize it is a book you already own.

They look a little disappointed and say:

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know you had it.”

You smile and say:

“It’s okay. It’s the thought that counts.”
