For the last two months, I've been working a second job. My husband lost his job, and I needed to help make ends meet. And here's what I was reminded of, yet again…, the hard way, in real time: you don't just create thirty-five extra hours a week and keep everything else the same.
I wish that were how it worked. I wish I could just add hours to my week like I'm adding an extra load of laundry. But that's not how time works. That's not how capacity works. And if you've ever taken on more than your plate could hold… a job, a caregiving season, a marriage that needed more of you, a kid in crisis, well then you already know exactly what I'm talking about.
This has been hard. I'm not going to sugarcoat that for you. Some days it's just tiring. Other days it's genuinely discouraging. And some days it feels heavy in a way that surprises me, because I didn't expect a temporary season to feel this permanent while I'm inside of it.
So today, I want to talk about what happens when life changes faster than your routines can keep up. I want to talk about the math of a hard season, what has to give, the voice in your head that won't shut up about it, and the five things I keep repeating to myself just to stay standing. This one is coming straight from my life right now, not from a place of having it all figured out. So let's get into it.
