Retired Anaheim Fire Captain Rick Cheatham on turning struggle into purpose.
Ten years into his marriage, his wife said she hated him, hated God, and quit. They spent four years putting it back together. They are still married 39 years later.
In 2013 his son Michael was murdered over about $20,000 of cannabis. The killer left. The bitterness did not. Rick’s line: when a snake bites you, the snake is gone. The poison is what kills you. Forgiving the unforgivable was how he got the venom out.
Five months after retiring from Anaheim Fire, he fell, broke C4–C5, and was paralyzed from the chest down. He had to learn to walk again. Same choice. Different crucible.
This conversation is about victimization vs. a decision, faith that is not a church argument, and what it costs to keep a life after the worst day.
