Yoga is often seen as union — the integration of opposing forces into a harmonious whole. However, union and separation are not contradictory but complementary, two sides of the same coin. In asana, we balance opposing forces like the left and right sides, learning to find our center through both asymmetry and symmetry. This union within the body also invites detachment from physical limitations, recognising that we are not defined by our capabilities.
Breath embodies union in the balance of inhaling and exhaling, while stilling the breath leads to detachment from fluctuating energy, resting in pure consciousness. Through non-attachment (vairagya), we separate from thoughts and stories, revealing the underlying unity of consciousness. Yoga teaches us to observe emotions and thoughts without attachment, recognising them as transient. Nature reflects this duality, and yoga helps us experience the union between consciousness and embodiment, transcending yet fully present in each moment. Union and separation are two forces guiding us to our true essence.
