At Semowi, we hear hippos every evening and throughout the night, often just in front of camp. But seeing them during the day can be surprisingly difficult.
In this episode, Séverine talks about our hippo neighbours on the Gomoti River: why they prefer quieter, shallower areas, why they disappear when the deck gets busy, and how they actually move underwater. Did you know that hippos don't really swim, but push themselves along the riverbed?
We also discover what happens when night falls and the hippos leave the water to feed.
It's a little glimpse into life beside a wild African river, where the animals are always around us, but they decide when they want to be seen. 🦛🌿
