Around 8 am on Monday, Kelsang Palmo began packing luggage for her son, who was about to start junior high school in the Gyirong county seat, about 70 kilometers away.

She stuffed a backpack with homemade Tibetan flatbread, apples, packaged cakes, cold medication and a thermos, along with a suitcase containing winter clothing and other daily necessities.
她往背包里塞进自家做的藏式饼、苹果、包装糕点、感冒药和一个保温杯，又准备了一个行李箱，装上冬衣和其他生活必需品。
After a mudslide struck Gyirong Port in the Xizang autonomous region on Wednesday morning, Kelsang Palmo and her family from Kopa village, near the hardest-hit border crossing, were relocated to a hotel to avoid secondary disasters.
上周三上午，西藏自治区吉隆口岸发生泥石流。格桑白姆一家来自口岸附近的郭巴村，这里也是受灾最严重的地区之一。为防范次生灾害，一家人随后被转移到一家酒店临时安置。
Despite the disruption caused by the mudslide, authorities have tried to maintain a sense of normalcy for local villagers, allowing the rituals and rhythms of daily life to continue.

Kelsang Palmo's son was among five children staying at the hotel who were picked up by an arranged vehicle around noon on Monday and taken to junior high school.

Throughout the morning, doors were left open as neighbors popped in and out of rooms, offering khata — silk scarves traditionally presented when welcoming or seeing off guests — to the children.
整个上午，酒店房间的门大多敞开着，邻里不时串门，为即将离开的孩子献上哈达。在当地传统中，哈达常用于迎送宾客，寄托祝福。
"In our tradition, each household also gives departing students some pocket money — maybe 5 to 10 yuan ($0.74 to $1.48) — as a blessing, and also so that they have some change to buy snacks while away from home," said Karma, head of Kopa village.
“按照我们的习俗，每户人家还会给要出门上学的孩子一点零花钱，一般是5元到10元，既是送上一份祝福，也让他们离家后手里有点零钱，可以买些零食。”郭巴村村长噶玛说。
The temporary shelter at the hotel provides free accommodation, including three meals a day, as well as medical care and psychological support, for about 120 relocated residents from Kopa and Trungsi villages.
目前，来自郭巴村和冲色村的约120名转移群众被临时安置在这家酒店。这里免费提供住宿和一日三餐，同时配备医疗服务和心理疏导。
"We also have a group of volunteers helping address their needs. These past few days, some have accompanied parents who are not familiar with this area to nearby stores to purchase items such as winter jackets for their children," Karma said.

As relocated villagers are unable to tend to their cattle, chickens or crops at home, several officials have also remained in the village to help with poultry and farm work.

"They stay in facilities that have passed safety inspections, and we are constantly monitoring local environmental conditions to ensure their safety as well," Karma said.

Butri and her brother, Migmar, were both excited to start the new semester.
布赤和哥哥米玛都为新学期的到来激动不已。
"I really like the free meals provided here, especially the white rice," Migmar said. "But I am also looking forward to visiting the school because I've never been there."

Butri said she was keen to meet her new classmates and kick shuttlecock with them.

While life continues, traces of the disaster remain visible.

The thumping of helicopters flying overhead can be heard constantly at the hotel. Residents have also put their favorite pastime of dancing and singing on hold out of respect for those who lost their lives in the mudslide.
在酒店里，直升机从头顶飞过的轰鸣声不时传来。为了表达对泥石流遇难者的哀悼，村民们也暂时停止了平日里最喜欢的唱歌和跳舞。
Sangmo, mother of the siblings, occasionally scrolled through video clips of the mudslide sweeping down the area. She did not see the waves of mud and ice herself, but she remembers hearing a deafening sound at the time.
兄妹俩的母亲桑姆偶尔会翻看手机里泥石流席卷当地的视频。灾害发生时，她并没有亲眼看到泥浆和冰块奔涌而下的场景，但她至今记得当时那震耳欲聋的巨响。
"It was horrifying," she said. "Our life here is nice, but I also miss my home."
“太可怕了。”她说，“我们在这里生活得很好，但我还是想家。”
