The world has never been more connected, yet so many people feel alone and that tension sits right at the centre of mental health today. I’m joined by Katie Waechter, a healthcare journalist, author, podcaster, and mental health advocate, for an honest conversation about what’s changing in our minds, our communities, and our daily habits and what we can actually do about it.
We start with Katie’s personal story: childhood upheaval, a mother’s depression and bipolar disorder, and the lived reality of navigating mental illness inside a family. From there we look at youth mental health in the wake of the COVID pandemic, including why social skills can feel harder now, how isolation becomes a habit, and why boredom is not a problem to “solve” but a space where creativity and resilience often grow.
We also dig into social media, doomscrolling, and the algorithm effect, plus the importance of boundaries for sleep, energy, and mood. Katie shares a balanced view of AI in healthcare and creativity, including the ethical risks of using AI in emotional and mental health contexts. We then zoom out to the bigger mental health treatment picture: medication stigma, the limits of one-size-fits-all approaches, and how holistic mental health tools, community, and connection can sit alongside clinical care, especially when people are struggling.
