You want the promotion.

You’ve been doing the work. Your scope has grown. You’re already operating at a bigger level.

And there’s one question you really want answered:

“Do you believe I will be promoted this cycle?”

But you don’t ask.

You tell yourself your boss already knows you want it. You don’t want to seem pushy. You’ll wait until review season. You don’t want to put anyone on the spot.

All of those explanations sound reasonable.

But sometimes, the real reason is much simpler.

You’re afraid they might say no.

Because as long as you don’t ask, you can keep hoping. You can keep reading into the positive feedback. You can keep assuming that if there were a problem, someone would tell you.

Not knowing can feel safer.

But not asking doesn’t protect you from the answer. It only prevents you from knowing what to do with it.

And while clarity can disappoint you, ambiguity can keep you stuck.

In this episode of Breaking Free from the Grind, I’m diving in to discuss:

  • Why avoiding the question can cost you more than hearing “no” - and how spending another year working toward an outcome based on assumptions nobody has confirmed can keep you stuck in the same place.
  • How to distinguish strategic patience from protecting yourself against discomfort - especially when you’re waiting for the right time, worrying about how your ambition will be perceived, or hoping your work will speak for itself.
  • How to ASK, HEAR, CHOOSE your way through the conversations that shape your career - ask the question you actually need answered, hear the information without turning it into a story about your worth, and choose what you want to do with what you learn.

Because self-trust doesn’t mean believing the answer will be yes.

It means trusting yourself to handle the answer, whatever it is.

Your boss might confirm you’re on track. They might identify a gap you need to close. They might tell you the timing isn’t right because of business constraints. Or they might reveal that the path forward isn’t what you thought it was.

Every one of those answers gives you something real to work with.

You can ask for specifics. Clarify expectations. Build visibility. Seek sponsorship. Make a plan - or decide that waiting indefinitely is no longer the right choice for you.

But you can’t make an informed career decision with information you never asked for.

So before you tell yourself it’s not the right time to have the conversation, ask yourself:

Am I being strategic - or am I trying to protect myself from an answer I might not like?

You don’t need to become so confident that you’re no longer afraid they’ll say no.

You need to trust yourself enough to ask anyway.

Ready to Advocate for Your Next Level?

You know you’re ready for more but aren’t sure how to advocate for yourself, position yourself for a promotion, or navigate the conversations that will get you there. This is exactly the kind of work I do with clients inside The Executive Edge™, my private 1:1 executive coaching program.

Together, we’ll work on the real situations happening in your career right now: the promotion conversation you keep putting off, the senior leader who needs to understand your value, the meeting where you need to trust your voice, and the leadership habits that may be keeping you from fully stepping into your next level.

At the heart of the work are three essential shifts:

Trust Yourself. Trust Your Voice. Trust Others.

You don’t need to keep proving your readiness in silence. You can learn to communicate your value, advocate for what you want, and make deliberate decisions about what comes next.
