You find an opportunity that excites you.
Maybe it’s a leadership development program. A stretch assignment. A new role. Or an investment in yourself and your career that feels bigger than anything you’ve done before.
And initially, something in you says:
Oh. This could be really good for me.
Then your brain gets involved.
I can probably figure this out on my own.
What if everyone else in the room is more senior than I am?
Q4 is insane right now. Maybe I’ll do this when things calm down.
I’ve never invested this much in myself before. What if it isn’t worth it?
Suddenly, something that felt exciting becomes something you need to analyze, research, and think through from every possible angle.
You want more information. You check your calendar. You look for reasons the timing isn’t right. You try to figure out whether you’re really ready.
Because underneath all that analysis is often a belief you may not even realize you’re carrying:
I need to feel certain before I can trust myself to say yes.
But self-trust isn’t certainty.
Certainty says, “I know exactly how this is going to work.”
Self-trust says, “I don’t know exactly what’s going to happen—and I trust myself enough to make the decision anyway.”
And here’s what’s interesting: you probably make decisions without perfect information at work all the time. You lead through ambiguity. You make recommendations knowing circumstances could change. You take on responsibilities you’ve never held before.
But when the decision is about investing in yourself, suddenly you want a guarantee.
In this episode of Breaking Free from the Grind, I’m diving in to discuss:
- Why “I can figure this out on my own” isn’t always the right answer - and how choosing the right support can be an act of discernment, not a sign that you aren’t capable of getting there yourself.
- Why you don’t have to earn your place in a room designed to help you grow - and how being surrounded by women who are further along can be exactly what helps you expand into the leader you’re becoming.
- Why waiting for the perfect time can keep your development on hold - and how to distinguish genuine discernment from the fear that shows up when you’re considering something new, unfamiliar, or bigger than what you’ve done before.
Because trusting yourself doesn’t mean saying yes to every opportunity.
It means being willing to hear your own answer without letting fear impersonate discernment.
So if you’re standing in front of a decision right now, ask yourself:
If I trusted myself completely, what would I choose?
Not the choice that guarantees the outcome.
Not the easiest thing to do.
Not what you can postpone until life gets calmer.
What would you choose if you trusted yourself to handle what comes next?
