I used to dread networking events. The first one I went to with a big national group was so transactional that every conversation felt like a referral audition, and I left drained. That experience is the reason I started hosting my own networking room for mom founders.
Here's the thing, though. When I looked back at every client I've landed, every single one came from a relationship or a referral. So the question isn't whether networking belongs in your marketing strategy. The question is how to stop spending your limited time in rooms that were never right for you, and how to show up well in the ones that are.
In this episode, I walk through how to find the right networking events (in person and virtual), how to size up a host before you commit, and when it makes sense to pay for access instead of defaulting to free. We talk about why recurring groups do some of your follow up for you, how to introduce yourself without a pitch slap, the questions I keep in my pocket when a conversation stalls, and the difference between relating and one upping. Plus my favorite trick for starting conversations with strangers, and the list of networking mistakes I had way too much fun putting together.
Q4 is a great time to build relationships, so if networking has been on your list, start here.
