Episode 130: Luke 1:5-80 - God Keeps His Promises

What happens when God’s promises seem delayed, circumstances appear impossible, and powerful kingdoms dominate the world? In Luke 1:5–80, we discover that God has not forgotten His people or abandoned His plan.

This sermon explores Luke’s ordered account of the miraculous announcements surrounding John the Baptist and Jesus. By comparing Zechariah’s doubt with Mary’s faithful response, we see two different ways of receiving God’s Word. We also trace Luke’s connections to Abraham and Sarah, Hannah, Elijah, Malachi, David, and Daniel—showing that these events are not an isolated Christmas story, but the continuation and fulfillment of God’s covenant promises.

John arrives in the spirit and power of Elijah to prepare a people for the Lord. Jesus follows as the promised Son of David, the true human King whose kingdom will never end. While earthly rulers and “beastly kingdoms” may create fear and suffering, replacing one political power with another cannot solve humanity’s deepest problem. The root issue is sin, and Jesus comes to deal with it.

Luke invites us to read this story with fresh eyes, trust the God who keeps His Word, and respond as Mary did: with humble faith and willing obedience. Even when hardship makes God’s promises feel uncertain, His kingdom remains secure. The long-awaited King has come to bring forgiveness, light, peace, and salvation.
