Can we know Jesus and still lose sight of Him? In this message from Luke 2:41–52, we follow Mary and Joseph as they search for twelve-year-old Jesus and discover Him in the temple, listening, asking questions, and attending to His Father’s business.

Their experience opens a window into our hearts. When life doesn’t unfold as expected, guilt, fear, and anger can expose our desire to stay in control. We become frustrated when God doesn’t follow our plans, forgetting that Jesus is committed to His Father’s purposes.

Yet the gospel offers something we could never achieve for ourselves: forgiveness and righteousness received by grace through faith. Jesus takes our sin upon Himself and gives us His righteousness. We come with empty hands, trusting what He has accomplished through His death and resurrection.

This sermon invites us to examine the distractions, misplaced priorities, and attempts to earn God’s favor that interrupt our communion with Christ. It also offers three ways to seek Him: recognize Jesus on His throne, pursue Him within the church, and join Him in His mission. Even listening and asking someone about their faith can open a conversation about Jesus.

Whether you feel weighed down by guilt, unsettled by uncertainty, or disappointed by circumstances, this message calls you to turn toward Christ. You don’t have to have everything figured out before you return. His grace invites you to lay down what you’re holding and receive Him by faith.

We may lose sight of Jesus, but He never loses us.
