EP. 151 | Bryce Smith | Why Does Life Feel Better Off the Grid?

Dela

Why does life sometimes feel better when there’s no service?

No notifications. No traffic. No endless scrolling. No climate-controlled room. No food showing up at your door.

Just sunlight. Dirt. Cold water. Movement. Fire. Stars. Good food. Good people. And whatever Mother Nature decides to throw at you.

In this solo episode of ALLSMITH, Bryce reflects on returning from time off the grid and explores a question that kept following him home:

Have we made life so convenient that we’ve forgotten some of what makes us feel alive?

This isn’t an anti-technology episode. And it’s definitely not Bryce telling everyone to sell their shit and move into the woods. 😂

It’s a conversation about contrast.

Cold makes warmth feel better.
Hunger makes food taste better.
Effort makes rest more meaningful.
Darkness makes the stars brighter.
Disconnection can create deeper connection.
And sometimes leaving the comforts of home reminds us how damn fortunate we are to have them.

Bryce explores sunlight and circadian rhythm, grounding, voluntary discomfort, movement, cooking over fire, sleeping outside, bugs, boredom, fireside conversations, sunsets, stars, perspective and the beautifully inconvenient parts of spending time in nature.

Because maybe we don’t always need another hack.

Maybe we need to remember how to be human.

IN THIS EPISODE

🌲 Nature is medicine
Why getting outside can change the way we think, feel and experience our lives.

☀️ Live closer to the sun
Morning light, darkness, circadian rhythm and why some of the simplest health practices are still incredibly powerful.

🥾 Choose hard things
Hiking, carrying your gear, cold water, bad sleep and the confidence that comes from realizing you can handle discomfort.

⚖️ Contrast creates gratitude
Why removing comfort temporarily can make you appreciate your bed, shower, food, relationships and everyday life differently.

🔥 Fire changes conversation
What happens when the phones disappear, nobody is rushing anywhere and people actually sit together and talk.

🌌 Awe changes perspective
Mountains, stars and sunsets don’t necessarily solve your problems. They can remind you how small some of them are.

🦟 The bugs are part of it
Adventure isn’t just beautiful sunsets. It’s dirt, mosquitoes, forgotten gear, weather and inconvenience. That’s part of the deal.

📵 Disconnect to reconnect
What happens when your phone stops working and you finally have enough space to hear yourself think.

🏕️ Come home differently
The point isn’t to escape your life. It’s to return to it with more gratitude, perspective and intention.

QUESTIONS WORTH SITTING WITH

When was the last time you watched a sunrise without checking your phone?

When did you last choose discomfort instead of avoiding it?

When did you last cook something slowly with people you love?

When did you last look at the stars long enough to feel small?

When did you last experience boredom without immediately trying to eliminate it?

And maybe most importantly:

When was the last time you felt completely alive?

QUOTES FROM THE EPISODE

“Comfort is beautiful. Dependence on comfort is dangerous.”

“Participation creates appreciation.”

“The stars don’t solve your problems. They remind you of their size.”

“Stop demanding a beautiful life without bugs.”

“Go somewhere your phone doesn’t work and see what starts working inside you.”

“Sometimes you have to leave your comfortable life to remember how beautiful your comfortable life actually is.”

“A beautiful life isn’t a life without discomfort. It’s a life where the discomfort is worth it.”

THE TAKEAWAY

You don’t need to disappear into the mountains for seven days.

Start smaller.

Get outside before you get online.

Walk barefoot.

Watch the sun come up.

Jump into cold water.

Take the longer trail.

Cook dinner outside.

Sit around a fire.

Look at the stars.

Put your phone away when someone you love is talking.

Let yourself be inconvenienced every once in a while.

And when you return home, notice how incredible a hot shower, comfortable bed and stocked refrigerator suddenly feel.

Maybe the goal isn’t to escape modern life.

Maybe it’s to occasionally step outside of it long enough to remember how fortunate we are to be living it.
