Sheila Denton spent more than 15 years in prison for a murder she did not commit. Now, after more than two decades of fighting for justice, she has finally been exonerated.
In 2006, Denton was convicted of murdering 73-year-old Eugene Garner in Waycross, Georgia. The prosecution's case relied heavily on controversial bite-mark evidence and testimony from a questionable witness.
Years later, forensic experts determined that the bite-mark analysis used to convict Denton was scientifically unreliable. Her conviction was overturned in 2020, but it wasn't until September 2026 that prosecutors finally dismissed the remaining charges.
In this episode of True Crime Squad, Kristi and Katie examine the murder investigation, the disputed forensic evidence, allegations of police pressure, the wrongful conviction, and the long road to Sheila Denton's exoneration.
Who really killed Eugene Garner? And how many other innocent people remain behind bars because of flawed forensic science?

Five-year-old Paitin Fields died in November 2017 after being rushed to a North Carolina hospital with injuries authorities determined were caused by strangulation and sexual assault. Her uncle, David Wesley Prevatte, was arrested in Louisiana in February 2022 and charged with first-degree murder and sexual offenses, nearly five years after her death. As Prevatte stands trial, the case raises troubling questions about the years-long investigation, conflicting family accounts, and whether prosecutors can prove who was responsible for Paitin's death.
