They tell you to focus on money. What are you getting paid for?

A person can know exactly how much money they want to make and have very little understanding of the problems someone would pay them to solve.

That understanding comes from getting involved. Following a problem through the people, processes, information and systems it touches. Staying with a subject long enough to notice what a quick glance misses.

You develop skills because the work starts asking more of you. There’s a reason to learn them and somewhere to apply them.

But someone can keep judging every possible direction by its imagined payoff before giving themselves a chance to understand it.
