What does it really mean to serve a community? In this episode of the Northwoods Kindred Podcast, we continue our The Mundane Is Sacred series by exploring service through leadership, particularly the roles of the Chieftain and Goði/Gyðja within a Heathen community. It's easy to see the titles. It's harder to see everything that happens behind them.
Leadership isn't simply standing at the front during blót or being the person everyone looks to during a gathering. Much of service happens in the ordinary moments no one sees—the preparation, phone calls, difficult conversations, teaching, listening, planning, cleaning up, checking on people, resolving problems, and simply being there when your community needs you.
We talk about what we've learned through our own years of leadership, the responsibilities that come with these roles, the mistakes and lessons along the way, and the importance of understanding that leadership isn't about being placed above your community. It's about accepting responsibility for serving it. Because some of the most sacred acts of service will never happen at an altar. They happen quietly, consistently, and often without recognition.
Sometimes the mundane act of simply showing up for your people is sacred enough.
