In this episode of the Northwoods Kindred Podcast, we continue our "The Mundane Is Sacred" series by looking at something that may not immediately sound sacred at all—organizations.
Kindreds, churches, nonprofits, associations, and other groups begin when people come together around a shared purpose. The meetings, bylaws, budgets, paperwork, planning, leadership roles, and endless behind-the-scenes work may seem mundane, but that structure can allow a community to accomplish things that would be difficult for any one person to do alone.
We talk about the difference between community and organization, the importance of clearly defined jobs and responsibilities, developing future leaders, preserving knowledge and traditions, pooling resources, and creating something capable of continuing beyond its founders. But organizations can also lose sight of why they were created. Titles can become status. Structure can become control. Protecting the organization can become more important than serving the people. Ultimately, an organization is simply a tool. What gives it meaning is what people choose to build with it. Community gives us people.
Service gives us responsibility. Organization gives us the structure to accomplish something together.
