Michael King gave the San Diego Padres seven shutout innings Tuesday night, but the offense gave him nothing in return as the Padres fell 1-0 to the Pittsburgh Pirates at Petco Park.
King allowed five hits over seven scoreless innings with seven strikeouts, while Adrian Morejon followed with a perfect six-pitch eighth inning. But San Diego managed only three hits and went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
The game remained scoreless until Oneil Cruz hit a two-out solo home run off Mason Miller in the ninth inning. Miller had thrown a season-high 30 pitches the previous night during San Diego's 12-inning loss.
Paul Skenes held the Padres scoreless over six innings, allowing only three hits with no walks. San Diego has now gone just 1-for-20 with runners in scoring position over its first two games of the series while dropping consecutive games to Pittsburgh.
Even more frustrating, Arizona came back late to win and Philadelphia lost Tuesday, giving the Padres another opportunity to gain ground in the NL Wild Card race.
