The San Diego Padres had chance after chance to win Monday night at Petco Park — and let every one of them slip away in a brutal 3-2, 12-inning loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
San Diego finished just 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position despite multiple late-game opportunities. Jake Cronenworth delivered an eight-pitch game-tying RBI single in the eighth and made several outstanding defensive plays, while Adrian Morejon threw two scoreless extra innings and repeatedly gave the Padres a chance to walk it off.
But the Padres failed to execute when it mattered most. Dustin Harris popped up a bunt in the 10th as Luis Campusano was doubled off second. Cronenworth popped up another bunt in the 11th. Jackson Merrill struck out twice with the bases loaded. Pittsburgh finally scored the winning run in the 12th, and the Padres struck out three straight times in the bottom half.
The loss was even more frustrating because Arizona and Philadelphia both lost, giving San Diego a chance to gain ground in the NL Wild Card race.
