The San Diego Padres appeared to seize control of Saturday’s game in Tampa Bay with a three-run seventh inning, but a disastrous bottom half flipped everything as the Rays rallied for a 7-6 victory.
Manny Machado delivered a two-run single to give San Diego a 5-3 lead, and Fernando Tatis Jr. followed with an electrifying steal of home to make it 6-3.
But the lead disappeared almost immediately.
Bradgley Rodriguez entered in the bottom of the seventh and failed to record an out, allowing three hits and four runs while walking one. A throwing error by Luis Rengifo on a Yandy Díaz single helped three runs score and tied the game 6-6. Chandler Simpson later singled home the go-ahead run against Adrian Morejon.
Ty France hit a two-run homer in the sixth, Jake Cronenworth added an RBI double, and Dustin Harris went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Walker Buehler allowed three earned runs over five innings, including long home runs by Jonathan Aranda and Junior Caminero.
San Diego finished with 10 hits and six runs but went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position and could not protect a three-run late lead as the NL Wild Card race continues to tighten.
