Infections with cyclospora, a parasite that spreads through raw produce and causes severe “explosive” diarrhea, are on the rise in multiple states.

Michigan, Ohio, North Carolina, New York, Texas and Illinois are among the hardest-hit states by the stomach bug, which usually increases during the warmer months in the United States.

What is cyclosporiasis?

It’s caused by a parasite and spreads through contaminated fresh produce. The most common symptom of cyclosporiasis is sudden, watery explosive diarrhea, severe stomach cramps, vomiting, nausea, loss of appetite, and fatigue.
