The market made solid gains on Wednesday, despite Wall Street closing largely in negative territory overnight. Defense ministry mum on alleged Philippines warship donation plan The Ministry of National Defense Ministry is refusing to comment on reports that the government is considering gifting the Philippines a soon-to-be-decommissioned Navy warship. According to the United Daily News, the Lai administration is hoping to donate the Navy's 500-tonne-class Jin Chiang Patrol Ship to the Philippines after it's decommissioned at the end of this year. K-M-T lawmaker Ma Wen-chun is voicing concern that the reported plan to donate the warship could undermine (破壞) the safety of Taiwan fishermen operating in an area where the exclusive economic zones of the two countries overlap. No government agency has confirmed whether such a plan is under consideration and what the reason for it would be. Aftershocks possible after magnitude 5.9 quake strikes off Hualien coast The Central Weather Administration is warning of possible aftershocks over the coming days following Wednesday's magnitude 5.9 earthquake, that struck off the coast of Hualien. The earthquake was centered some 136-kilometers east of Hualien County Hall, at a depth of 13-kilometers. It was felt strongest in parts of Hualien, Yilan, Chiayi County, Changhua and Yunlin, where it measured a 2 on the weather administration's intensity scale. According to the weather administration's Seismological Center, the quake was caused by the Philippine Sea Plate moving beneath the Eurasian Plate and possible aftershocks could reach a magnitude of 5. ISRAEL SUSPENDS FLYDUBAI FLIGHTS AS MOSSAD JOINS PROBE INTO CO-PILOT SUSPECTED OF STABBING CAPTAIN ON TEL AVIV-BOUND PLANE Israel has suspended all FlyDubai flights and launched a multi-agency investigation — involving Mossad, Shin Bet and the military — after a co-pilot on a Tel Aviv-bound flight allegedly stabbed the captain and attempted to crash the aircraft. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called the incident on FlyDubai flight FZ1073 an extremely (極為) serious security breach, saying the Omani co-pilot appeared to have tried to sabotage the plane's systems before passengers and crew subdued him. The Boeing 737, carrying 174 passengers including 27 children, was diverted to the Saudi city of Tabuk after plunging more than five thousand metres in under two minutes. Switzerland Glaciers Lose 5Percent Ice Volume Experts report that glaciers in Switzerland have lost 5.5% of their ice volume this year due to heat waves and low winter snowfall. The GLAMOS Swiss glacier monitoring service and Swiss Academy of Sciences released a statement Thursday, warning that Alpine glaciers can’t survive (存活) long-term under these conditions. The report highlights concerns about global warming’s impact on Europe, the fastest-warming continent. The record retreat of glacier ice in Switzerland occurred in 2022. Over the past five years, Swiss ice volume has declined by nearly one-fifth. This accelerated melt affects Switzerland and the continent’s major rivers. That was the I.C.R.T.
