Blessed Bertrand of Garrigues walked barefoot beside St. Dominic, founding the Dominican order town by hungry town.
One of St. Dominic's first companions, Bertrand gave up comfort entirely to live in radical poverty and preach the truth across a region swept up in heresy. He went on to govern the Dominicans' first house in Paris and later serve as provincial of Provence, but he never stopped going out to preach himself — he died doing exactly that.
"Bertrand kept walking beside Dominic anyway, because he believed the souls in front of him were worth every mile."
