September 4: SAINT ROSALIA: Alone With Christ, Never Forgotten

St. Rosalia walked away from a noble Sicilian family to live alone in a cave — then saved a plague-stricken city five centuries later.

Rosalia gave up wealth and an expected marriage to live hidden in a cave on Monte Pellegrino, seen by no one, known only to Christ, until her death around 1166. Nearly 500 years later, in 1624, her relics were discovered and carried through plague-stricken Palermo in procession — and the plague stopped.

"I, Rosalia, daughter of Sinibald, Lord of Monte delle Rose, and Quisquina, have taken the resolution to live in this cave for the love of my Lord, Jesus Christ."
