Shocking New Mercy for Animals Investigation into Costco Chicken Supplier
(0:03) Live from the Unchained TV headquarters in Los Angeles, California, this is Truth Files with Jane Velez Mitchell. (0:11) A new investigation revealed the sickening reality of so-called organic chicken. (0:18) Our investigators spent weeks working at an organic chicken farm that supplies Costco and filming the horrors they witnessed.
 
(0:30) Baby chicks who were ill, injured, or just not growing fast enough were dropped into buckets along with those who had died, (0:40) and then dumped into compost piles, even though some were clearly still alive and chirping. (0:48) So disturbing, really heartbreaking images. (0:52) And by the way, this investigation is the subject of a major article in Vox entitled, (1:00) Costco's Organic Chicken Isn't What It Seems.
 
(1:03) A disturbing new investigation reveals how easy it is for farms to subvert organic rules and hide animal cruelty. (1:10) And now we're very excited to have on the president of Mercy for Animals, Arash Yomtobi. (1:15) Arash, thanks for joining us.
 
Put these disturbing images into context for us. (1:21) Tell us about your undercover investigation.(1:24) Well, thanks so much for having me, Jane.
 
(1:26) You know, Jane, in the 25-year history as an organization, (1:33) Mercy for Animals has conducted 150 investigations that expose the truth and shed light onto the practices of factory farming. (1:41) Now, I can't say that I've watched all of them, but I've seen many of them, (1:48) both in terms of what we've done as well as many other investigations. (1:51) And the footage and documentation from this latest investigation from a farm in North Carolina (2:00) raising chickens for Costco is really unfathomable and disturbing.
 
(2:04) From blatant animal cruelty to biosecurity and health-related issues being broken to USDA organic standards not being upheld, (2:14) even though these chickens were sold as organic. (2:17) But the biggest takeaway for those watching today is that this isn't just about one farm. (2:24) In fact, this is the second time in five years that Mercy for Animals has exposed horrific cruelty connected to Costco's chicken supply chain.
 
(2:34) Costco promised reform after our 2021 investigation. (2:38) We went back and animals are still suffering. (2:41) These are not isolated incidents.
 
(2:44) They reflect broader systemic problems within factory farming. (2:49) Well, we're going to get to Costco's comment and Pilgrim's Pride comment in just a moment. (2:55) But first, let's play part two of the video of your undercover investigation.
 
(3:00) Once they grew bigger, those who were sick or hurt got beaten with a pipe. (3:14) Thrown into piles filled with the dead. (3:18) And then dumped into the compost piles.
 
(3:21) Here, those still moving and making noise are beaten with a rake. (3:34) Wow. (3:35) Your undercover investigator said he documented more than 70 incidents of improper euthanasia, which sounds very clinical, (3:43) with the farm manager regularly euthanizing sick and injured chickens by bludgeoning them with PVC pipes and rakes.
 
(3:50) In one instance, he crushed a bird with a bucket and another slamming a chicken against a wall. (3:55) I mean, this is so disturbing. (4:00) It's almost hard to process.
 
(4:04) The speed in which they've been bred to grow, to be top heavy, to meet the demands for chicken breasts. (4:10) Many chickens were seen struggling to walk, many with broken bones.(4:15) And they endure chronic pain throughout their short lives.
 
(4:20) So, we are going to talk now about what Costco has said. (4:26) And by the way, you have a petition at CostcoExposed.com that you're urging people to sign. (4:33) So, let's talk a little bit about what Costco has said.
 
(4:37) We reached out to Costco, we had Unchained TV, and we invite them or anyone connected to the story on at any time, any companies. (4:45) But essentially what they said, and here's just a screen grab of the email, Costco Media Inquiry. (4:52) Good afternoon, Jane.
 
Thank you for reaching out to Costco and completing the media inquiry form. (4:56) Please contact Pilgrims with a website with your inquiry. (5:01) We appreciate your interest in Costco Wholesale.
 
(5:03) Please do not attribute my name to the information in this email. (5:06) Kind regards, and the person who sent this. (5:09) And Pilgrims, we also reached out to them.
 
(5:13) They issued a long statement. (5:14) Here are some of the highlights. (5:15) Pilgrims is deeply disturbed by the content depicted in the video footage collected at a farm operated by one of our independent contract growers.
 
(5:22) The treatment shown is unacceptable, violates our animal welfare standards, and does not reflect the values of our company. (5:29) Animal welfare is a core responsibility at Pilgrims. (5:31) We require all growers and their employees to undergo comprehensive animal welfare training,(5:36) and adhere to strict standards designed to protect the health and well-being of the animals in their care.
 
(5:40) In this case, a grower and certain farm employees failed to uphold those standards and ignored the training and expectations provided by Pilgrims. (5:47) Upon becoming aware of this conduct, we immediately terminated our relationship with the grower. (5:51) We're also conducting a comprehensive review of our animal welfare training and compliance programs, (5:55) and initiating additional third-party audits across our grower network beginning this week.
 
(6:01) Your response to the Costco statement, which simply directs us to Pilgrims and Pilgrims.(6:10) Yeah, dropping one farm or supplier is crisis management. (6:15) It's not animal protection, and it's not accountability to consumers.
 
(6:19) While Pilgrims' pride cutting ties with one supplier addresses a single incident, (6:24) it doesn't fix the fundamental problem. (6:28) And while actions taken at a single supplier may address one situation, (6:33) they don't resolve the broader issues that can exist throughout the entire supply chain. (6:38) Let me put this into context for you, Jane.
 
(6:41) This one farm is estimated to raise up to 520,000 chickens each year, (6:46) but Costco's influence extends far beyond a single supplier. (6:51) Costco's vertically integrated supplier, Lincoln Premium Poultry, (6:56) raises around 100 million birds per year and represents 40% of Costco's supply chain. (7:03) So without proper independent auditing and transparency, (7:07) if Costco or Pilgrims simply cut ties with this one farm, (7:13) the problem can just move to the next farm and the farm after that.
 
(7:17) And frankly, our investigation from 2021 just reinforces that. (7:24) What matters is whether Costco adopts enforceable standards (7:27) that follow every chicken in its supply chain, no matter where that animal is raised. (7:35) Consumers don't buy chicken based on the name of an individual farm.
 
(7:39) They buy it from Costco because they trust Costco. (7:44) And in fact, Costco charges and makes most of its profits from an annual membership fee, (7:49) which I'm a paying member of.(7:51) People pay that membership for the trust and consistency that Costco prides itself on.
 
(7:57) That's why Costco cannot outsource responsibility here. (8:01) Shoppers aren't tracking down which farm or processor supplied the meat. (8:07) They place their trust in retailers where they shop, (8:11) and they expect brands like Costco to set meaningful standards throughout the supply chain.
 
(8:18) All right, well, let's continue on with the Mercy for Animals (8:22) undercover video of this animal factory that supplies chickens to Pilgrim's Pride, (8:28) which in turn supplies them to Costco. (8:52) Never allowed outdoors, never breathing fresh air or standing in grass, (8:56) in violation of organic requirements. (8:59) This is the outdoor pen they never saw.
 
(9:03) Why is that so significant that they, according to your undercover investigator, (9:08) never got to the outdoor area? (9:11) That is required to call yourself organic, is it not? (9:16) It is, and consumers associate USDA organic with higher standards. (9:20) Now, no label can make animal suffering acceptable, (9:24) but Costco sold this chicken as organic, (9:28) and consumers were asked to trust that these standards were being followed and met. (9:33) What our investigator documented raises serious questions about that trust.
 
(9:38) Birds clearly denied outdoor access, birds standing in feces-filled mud, (9:43) high ammonia levels, inadequate darkness for sleep. (9:47) These are not small technical violations. (9:50) These conditions cause suffering, (9:53) and the investigation documented conditions that raised questions (9:56) about whether those expectations were fulfilled.
 
(9:59) But this isn't, again, about one farm. (10:02) This investigation focuses on one supplier,(10:05) but Costco's influence extends far beyond one farm. (10:09) The company has the power to reduce suffering for more than 250 million chickens annually (10:15) by implementing proven, science-backed animal welfare standards throughout its supply chain.
 
(10:23) All right, well, we are going to continue with the video of your undercover investigation.(10:29) And in the buildings where the animals were forced to spend their lives, (10:32) leaks and uneven flooring contributed to feces-filled mud (10:36) that birds were left to stand and walk in.(10:42) The farm also failed to take the most basic measures (10:46) to prevent the spread of diseases that could endanger humans.
 
(10:49) Their practices included carrying dead chickens into different buildings that contained living ones (10:55) and never stepping into the standard boot sanitizer. (10:58) And the investigator repeatedly witnessed darkling beetles, (11:02) which can spread E. coli and salmonella. (11:05) Worst of all, even if a farm has none of these conditions or abuses, (11:10) Costco chickens have been genetically selected to grow so quickly (11:14) that their bodies collapse under their own weight.
 
(11:17) Chickens bred for such unnaturally fast growth are known to endure crippling pain, (11:23) immobility, leg deformities, and even heart failure, often when they're still babies. (11:32) Oh, this is difficult to watch. (11:35) And it is, it's heartbreaking.
 
It really is. (11:40) What about this whole issue involving the size of the chickens? (11:46) And the average consumer may feel, well, nobody has control of that. (11:51) That's nature.
 
What are your thoughts? (11:54) Well, in fact, we do have control over that. (11:58) Most of the chickens in the supply chain at Costco and across factory farms across the world (12:06) are fast growing breeds. (12:10) And that is ultimately as a result of the demand to be able to have a lot of,(12:17) they're made top heavy to have more, to keep up with the demand for white meat.
 
(12:23) There are alternatives that science fact has shown slower growing breeds (12:30) that reduces significant amount of suffering. (12:33) These large breeds grow so quickly and the young bones and anatomy of these chickens (12:40) and chicks, frankly, don't have the ability to hold up their weight. (12:46) So you end up with results of extreme pain, chronic suffering, broken bones,(12:53) lots of different painful syndromes.
 
(12:56) And I'll say one other thing. (12:58) It's important to note that the birds suffering from foot infections due to feces filled litter (13:04) and sleep deprivation from constant light and respiratory damage and burns around their eyes (13:11) from dangerous ammonia levels aren't just isolated failures. (13:16) They're very much predictable results of standard industry practice.
 
(13:22) And Costco allows these to happen. (13:24) Consumers paying a premium shouldn't have to wonder if the outdoor access promised (13:29) by the USDA organic label was canceled because of a fabricated weather excuse, (13:36) which is what our investigator documented. (13:39) The reality is that proven science fact standards, slower growing breeds already exist.
 
(13:45) And that mandate and the processes also mandate better air quality, (13:51) periods of darkness for rest, meaningful outdoor access. (13:56) Costco doesn't need to reinvent the wheel.(13:59) They just need to step up, honor their past promises, (14:03) and actually choose to enforce these standards across their supply chain.
 
(14:08) So let's take a look at what some folks are saying. (14:12) People should have to witness and feel the effects and consequences of their actions. (14:16) They are too far removed from the reality and pain they call.
 
(14:19) The way to get the general public on board is to unveil to them (14:23) the extreme physical dangers and their children. (14:25) We've got to get them to actually watch the footage because most don't want to see it. (14:31) And this woman, Nilo Farr, says, I plan to speak to Costco manager (14:35) the next time I visit them in Arlington.
 
(14:38) What is it that you would like people to do? (14:40) Obviously, you want them to sign the petition, which is at CostcoExposed.com. (14:46) But what can the general public do beyond that?(14:51) Aside from, obviously, not consuming the chicken (14:54) would be probably your ultimate recommendation. (14:59) But I don't want to put words in your mouth. (15:02) No, I mean, I agree with you, Jane.
 
(15:04) Ultimately, it's a each person is there to make their own decisions. (15:08) I personally do not consume any animals and have not done so for the last 10 years, (15:15) nor has my entire family, including our companion animals. (15:19) And we are all thriving.
 
(15:21) But at the end of the day, consumers are being absolutely misled. (15:26) And people pay a premium for the USDA organic label, for standards at Costco. (15:34) And so first step, we would love for everyone to go to CostcoExposed.com, (15:39) take two minutes, get involved with us.

(16:02) And then there are other ways that you can learn about getting involved on Costco Exposed, (16:08) as well as on At Mercy for Animals. (16:10) All right, well, we have the final piece of this undercover investigation video. (16:16) Let's play it.
 
(16:17) We exposed Costco's cruelty in 2021. (16:21) They did nothing of impact. (16:23) Costco still has no meaningful standards across their operations, (16:27) and animals are still paying the price with their suffering.
 
(16:31) It's time to hold Costco accountable. (16:43) Getting back to the Costco statement, (16:45) basically, I asked for a comment to the undercover investigation and the video, (16:51) and they directed me to Pilgrims, which seems to imply, (16:55) and they're invited on any time to dialogue.(16:58) We'd love to dialogue with Costco, (17:00) but it seems to imply that they are saying, (17:03) it's not our responsibility, it's Pilgrim's.
 
(17:05) What is your reaction to that? (17:08) Ultimately, their responsibility is built on the promises(17:12) that they make to their customers and to their members. (17:15) It is a company, an enterprise that is built on trust and consistency. (17:21) This has been broken.
 
(17:24) They made their promise five years ago after our first investigation in 2021, (17:28) and they broke that. (17:30) Costco does not need to reinvent the wheel. (17:33) Proven standards and science-backed measures already exist.
 
(17:37) Slower-growing breeds can meaningfully reduce the suffering (17:41) that the fast-growing breeds endure chronically. (17:44) Improved living conditions like better litter to reduce infections(17:48) and the risk of infections and disease spread. (17:52) Proper lighting with adequate time for darkness so the chickens can rest.
 
(17:57) Enrichments to allow for their natural behaviors in their young lives, (18:02) and independent auditing and transparency. (18:05) These are reasonable and achievable. (18:07) Costco just has to make the decision to do it.
 
(18:11) Let's talk about the government, (18:14) because if you're organic, certified organic, (18:17) there are rules that go along with it. (18:19) As we've talked about, access to the outdoors, (18:22) which your undercover investigator said in his two-and-a-half months (18:25) he never saw the chickens get. (18:27) So the USDA said to Vox, (18:29) it must provide, quote, due process under the law (18:32) and allowing certified organic farms to come into compliance (18:35) when problems occur.
 
(18:37) So just as a person, (18:40) I would say due process does not happen (18:43) without some kind of inquiry or investigation. (18:47) In order to gather the facts so that due process can occur.(18:50) So what is it that you would like to see from the U.S. government? (18:54) Yes, well, we've already taken this step.
 
(18:57) Mercy for Animals submitted extensive documented evidence to the USDA (19:02) and also filed a criminal complaint. (19:05) So they have all the facts needed to act. (19:08) And while due process takes time, (19:10) the reality is consumers shouldn't have to rely (19:13) on an undercover investigation or a nonprofit (19:16) to uncover conditions that violate organic standards.
 
(19:21) And more importantly, (19:22) I don't think that Costco needs to wait on government bureaucracy. (19:27) Costco approved this supplier (19:29) and has direct control over its supply chain right now. (19:33) They have the power and responsibility today (19:35) to enforce real meaningful standards (19:38) for the 250 million chickens in their system.
 
(19:40) The broader issue here is the consumer trust. (19:44) People pay a premium for the USDA organic label (19:47) assuming higher standards are being enforced in real time, (19:51) not after animals have already endured horrific suffering. (19:56) And while the government carries out its due process, (19:59) Costco is the entity driving the demand.
 
(20:02) Costco promised reform five years ago (20:04) and they don't need a lengthy government inquiry (20:08) to know that beating birds with sticks (20:12) or burying chicks alive into compost(20:15) while they're still chirping (20:17) fall outside of the standard of animal welfare. (20:21) Because Unchained TV has covered (20:23) so many undercover investigations by various groups,(20:27) at one point we called for live cameras (20:31) inside all slaughterhouses and factory farms.(20:34) And in fact, the new term for factory farms is animal factories.
 
(20:38) And we pointed out that Spain and England (20:42) have some CCTV requirements inside slaughterhouses. (20:48) And one member of the state assembly even said (20:52) that he thought it was a good idea. (20:55) So what are your thoughts about, (20:57) because certainly the camera tells the story.
 
(21:01) That's why your undercover investigation is so powerful (21:04) because there's videotape(21:05) that this undercover investigator took (21:09) during his two and a half months on this animal factory. (21:12) So what are your thoughts about having cameras (21:15) inside all animal factories and slaughterhouses? (21:21) It's a great question and it's a great endeavor. (21:25) Ultimately, independent auditing and transparency (21:29) is clearly required (21:30) and that is what undercover investigations do.
 
(21:35) It is not a sustainable thing. (21:37) And to your point with the expansiveness (21:40) of technology and innovation, (21:42) there are opportunities for us to think about (21:44) how we can ensure that accountability. (21:47) Ultimately, and for this, (21:49) it's something that Costco has control over of (21:52) in terms of the auditing that can be done (21:55) and the selection of their suppliers.
 
(21:57) And that's something that I would ask Costco (21:59) and other retailers to evaluate and look at. (22:03) Well, I have to say thank you, Arash, (22:06) so much for taking time (22:08) to break down this undercover investigation. (22:12) We here at Unchained TV, (22:13) a 501c3 nonprofit, (22:15) will continue to push ahead for cameras (22:18) in all animal factories (22:20) and as well all slaughterhouses.
 
(22:24) If people are saying, (22:25) well, there's nothing to hide, (22:27) then there's nothing to hide. (22:29) Let's just see it, right? (22:31) So perhaps Mercy for Animals (22:33) would like to join forces with us in our campaign (22:36) to get cameras, (22:39) which could be done by a legislative action. (22:42) I think there are quite a few groups (22:43) that would go along with it.
