When it comes to performance, most of us measure too much and do too little. We put effort into processes, systems and to-do lists that give the illusion of progress, then end up tied in knots by the count.
In this episode I make the case for stripping measurement right back to a few honest questions about your own behaviour, and then getting on with it. I look at where systems like OKRs help and where they become a debate about the system rather than clarity on what you’re trying to achieve and at Marshall Goldsmith’s daily questions in Triggers, which measure effort rather than outcome.
I share the detail of prompts I am using as an experiment to drive my own behaviour. I also explain why prmpts work without needing a settled goal, and what I’ve noticed since I started using them. Try your own version and let me know how you get on at damian@effectivechallenge.com.
